Crunchy Fun

Kids love getting their hands dirty, being creative, and eating yummy stuff. If you’ve never made homemade granola, it’s a great way to let them do all three. The ingredients are simple, you get to mix it up with your own hands, and you can add just about anything you want to make it unique. If you have more than one child or even family members with different preferences (nuts or fruit), you can make a couple of different varieties. It’s a great snack and is super yummy on yogurt with berries (our favorite!) They’ve made tacos, pizza and cookies, but homemade cereal might just take the cake!

Here’s how to do it:

2 cups rolled oats (not instant)
1 cup nuts of your choice (toasted or not)
1/2 cup sunflower seeds (toasted or not)
1/2 cup unsweetened coconut
1/4 cup toasted wheat germ (toasted or not)
1 dried fruit (optional)
1/4 cup cooking oil
1/2 cup honey

If you choose to toast the nuts, seeds and wheat germ, do this first. Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl, except for the optional fruit. Then add the oil and honey and toss/mix together until blended. Spread out on a cookie tray and cook for 30 minutes at 300 degrees, tossing every ten minutes to ensure even browning. Add the fruit after it has finished cooking, let it cool and store it in an airtight container. Enjoy!
