Do You Jello?

We definitely Jello - but we do the homemade kind. Why? It’s a great, introductory cooking project for smaller kids, and homemade gelatin is free from the any of the artificial flavors, synthetic dyes, and potentially sugar, found in the pre-made versions. There’s nothing more yummy and interesting than this strange, wobbly dessert. Here’s how to do it:

INGREDIENTS:
  • 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin
  • 1/2 C fruit juice
  • 3 C hot fruit juice
  • sugar or sweetener is optional if desired

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Put 1/2 C juice into a bowl or DISH
  • Sprinkle the gelatin on top and let IT sit for 10 min.
  • Add 3 C hot juice (plus sugar if desired) and stir until completely mixed and gelatin is dissolved
  • Add fresh chunks of fruit (optional) refrigerate until set (1-2 hours)

Note: Certain raw fruits have an enzyme that will prevent gelatin from setting. Pineapple, mango, kiwi, and ginger must all be cooked for 5 minutes to destroy the enzyme before using.
